🗺️ Where: Tuscan Upper Tiber Valley, province of Arezzo

Sansepolcro is the largest town in the Upper Tiber Valley and the birthplace of Piero della Francesca, one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance. Its flat, orderly old town is lovely to walk around, full of palaces, churches and shops. Here you can see Piero’s Resurrection, which Aldous Huxley called “the best picture in the world”, and every September the town celebrates the Palio della Balestra crossbow contest.

What to see in Sansepolcro

  • Museo Civico: home to Piero della Francesca’s Resurrection and Misericordia Polyptych, together with works by Pontormo and Santi di Tito.
  • Cathedral of San Giovanni Evangelista, with the Volto Santo, a large wooden crucifix of medieval origin.
  • Aboca Museum, the museum of herbs and old pharmacy, in an elegant palazzo in the centre.
  • Piero della Francesca’s house and the streets of the old town, with Piazza Torre di Berta, the heart of the town.
