Montone is a medieval Umbrian village perched on a hill between the Tiber and Carpina valleys. It has been one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) since 2003 and holds the Touring Club Orange Flag. It is the home town of Braccio Fortebraccio, the famous condottiero, and keeps a deeply venerated relic, the Holy Thorn (Santa Spina).
What to see in Montone
- San Francesco museum complex: the fourteenth-century church and museum, linked to the story of the Holy Thorn, the relic given to the village by Carlo Fortebraccio.
- Piazza Fortebraccio, the heart of the village, and the paved lanes climbing between stone houses.
- Braccio’s fortress (Rocca) and the Collegiate church, in the upper part of the village.
