🗺️ Where: Umbria, in the hills above Città di Castello, over 600 metres high
Monte Santa Maria Tiberina is a tiny medieval village perched over 600 metres high in the hills between Umbria and Tuscany. For centuries, from 1250 to 1815, it was the heart of a small independent state: the Marquisate of the Bourbon del Monte, an imperial fief. Today it is a peaceful place with a view that on clear days sweeps across the whole Upper Tiber Valley.
What to see in Monte Santa Maria Tiberina
- The castle and Palazzo Bourbon del Monte, residence of the marquises and symbol of the village, visible from far away.
- Church of Santa Maria, with the chapel and crypt of the Bourbon del Monte family and a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, linked to the Ascension Day celebrations.
- The walls and viewpoints, looking over the Tiber valley, the chestnut woods and the hills as far as Tuscany.
