🗺️ Where: Umbria, Upper Tiber Valley

Città di Castello is the main town of the Umbrian Upper Tiber Valley: an art town enclosed by Renaissance walls, with noble palaces, churches and an important art gallery. It is also the birthplace of Alberto Burri, one of the great artists of the twentieth century, to whom two extraordinary exhibition spaces are dedicated.

What to see in Città di Castello

  • Pinacoteca Comunale (Town Art Gallery) in Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, with works by Raphael, Luca Signorelli and other Renaissance masters.
  • Burri Collection, split between Palazzo Albizzini and the Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco, huge former tobacco-drying sheds turned into a museum.
  • The Cathedral with its distinctive round Romanesque bell tower, the Town Hall and the Civic Tower.
  • The old town with Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Gabriotti and the shopping streets.
