🗺️ Where: Tuscan Upper Tiber Valley, province of Arezzo
Anghiari is the medieval village just down the road from Cà del Bocca: a gem perched on a hill overlooking the whole Upper Tiber Valley. It is one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy), holds the Touring Club Orange Flag and is a Cittaslow town. Its name is linked to the Battle of Anghiari of 29 June 1440, made famous by Leonardo da Vinci’s lost fresco in Palazzo Vecchio. With its walls, stone lanes and craft workshops, it is perfect for a stroll, an aperitivo or a traditional dinner.
What to see in Anghiari
- Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari (Battle Museum) in Palazzo del Marzocco, telling the story of the 1440 battle and of the town.
- Museo di Palazzo Taglieschi, a state museum with art and objects from the valley, including a beautiful wooden Madonna by Jacopo della Quercia.
- Piazza Baldaccio and the Galleria Magi, the covered passage linking the two main squares, opened in 1889 to a design by engineer Francesco Tuti and named after the sixteenth-century Anghiari military engineer Girolamo Magi.
- The walls and the sentry walk, with the medieval gates and the viewpoint on Via delle Mura over the Tiber valley.
- Lo Stradone (Corso Matteotti), the long straight road running down from the village towards Sansepolcro: the best view is from the Chiesa della Croce.
- The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (the Propositura) and the Badia di San Bartolomeo, with important works of art.
