📍 Distance from Cà del Bocca: about 180 km, 2 hours 25 minutes by car

⏱️ Time needed: a full day

🗺️ Where: Umbria, in the Monti Sibillini National Park, at about 1,450 metres

Castelluccio di Norcia is a small village perched on a hill at almost 1,500 metres, above the Pian Grande: a vast high plain surrounded by the Sibillini Mountains. Between late May and mid-July the lentil fields fill with cornflowers, poppies and daisies: this is the famous Fiorita (the flowering), which turns the plain into a mosaic of colours. The village still bears the scars of the 2016 earthquakes and rebuilding is under way, but the landscape around it remains one of the most spectacular in Italy.

What to see and do

  • The Fiorita on the Pian Grande: the timing changes every year with the weather; the best moment is usually between late June and early July.
  • The view from the village over the Pian Grande, with its colourful strips of cultivated fields.
  • Hikes in the Sibillini Mountains: panoramic ridge trails, suitable for fit walkers.
  • Castelluccio lentils (IGP), to taste in local restaurants or take home.
  • Norcia, about half an hour away: birthplace of St Benedict, famous for its cured meats and black truffles.

How to get there from Cà del Bocca

Castelluccio is about 2 hours 25 minutes away across Umbria: it is best to set off early in the morning. On flowering weekends the road to Castelluccio may be closed to cars and served by shuttle buses: check the Monti Sibillini National Park website before you go. The route is shown below.

Tips for your visit

  • Bring a jacket even in summer: at this altitude it is often windy and the temperature drops quickly.
  • Do not walk into the fields: they are crops, so admire the flowers from the paths and gravel roads.
  • If you can, go on a weekday: flowering weekends are very busy.
  • Sunset over the Pian Grande is the best time for photos.
