📍 Distance from Cà del Bocca: about 14 km, 20 minutes by car
⏱️ Time needed: a couple of hours (combine it with Monterchi)
🗺️ Where: Umbria, province of Perugia, on the Tuscan border
Citerna is a small medieval Umbrian village on a hilltop overlooking the whole Upper Tiber Valley, right on the border with Tuscany. It is one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) and is famous for its medieval covered walkways and for an unexpected treasure: a terracotta Madonna by Donatello, the great sculptor’s only work in Umbria. It is twenty minutes from Cà del Bocca and perfect to visit together with Monterchi.
What to see in Citerna
- The medieval walkways: a covered passage with wooden beams and large openings running along the walls, with views over the valley and Monterchi.
- Church of San Francesco: home to the Madonna and Child by Donatello, which returned to Citerna in 2012 after a long restoration at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, and works by Pomarancio.
- Corso Garibaldi and Piazza Scipione Scipioni, with a panoramic terrace over the valley and the Civic Tower.
- Church of San Michele Arcangelo, with a glazed terracotta Madonna and Child of the Della Robbia school, and the remains of the Rocca, the oldest part of the village.
