🗺️ Where: Tuscan Upper Tiber Valley, on the border with Umbria

Monterchi is a small medieval village perched on a hill in the Upper Tiber Valley (Valtiberina), a few kilometres from the border with Umbria. It is famous all over the world for one extraordinary masterpiece: the Madonna del Parto by Piero della Francesca, one of the most celebrated frescoes of the Renaissance. From Cà del Bocca it takes about twenty minutes, driving through the countryside between Anghiari and Citerna.

What to see in Monterchi

  • Musei Civici Madonna del Parto: home to Piero della Francesca’s fresco (c. 1455-1465), originally painted for the little church of Santa Maria a Momentana. A pregnant Madonna, very rare in art, between two angels opening the curtains of a pavilion.
  • Museo delle Bilance (Scales Museum) in Palazzo Massi: one of Europe’s most important collections of antique scales and weights, with an interactive section on old trades. The same ticket covers the Madonna del Parto.
  • The village and its walls: medieval lanes, arches and gates, up to the panoramic terrace of the Rocca, overlooking the Cerfone valley and the Umbrian hills.
  • Churches nearby: San Michele at Padonchia (about 2 km), Sant’Apollinare at Le Ville and San Michele Arcangelo at Pianezze.
